* Some research suggests that binaural beats can strengthen certain brain waves and aid in productivity, meditation or focus. Tones of slightly different frequencies are played in each ear, and the resulting illusion of a pulse is the 'beat'. The difference between the two frequencies is measured in Hertz (Hz). When listening to binaural beats, brain activity matches the frequency set by the frequency of the beat. This is called the frequency-following effect, and is how binaural beats are used to 'entrain' the mind to reach certain mental states.

Research for the effectiveness of binaural beats is lacking and conflicting, but results seem to be dependant on the individual so give it a go and see how you feel.

** Pink noise is similar to white noise and is an assortment of all audible frequencies. But where white noise contains all audible frequencies at an equal volume, the frequencies in pink noise decrease by 3dB with each higher octave. This gives more power to the lower frequencies and creates a ‘warmer’ sounding noise. Because of the way the human ear works, pink noise is perceived as having a pleasant-sounding, balanced volume across frequencies. Pink noise is often considered more relaxing than white noise, since it does not sound as high-pitched. This warmer ‘colour’ of noise is often compared to rainfall or rushing water.

Researchers have observed patterns similar to pink noise in short segments of birdsong, as well as in some urban soundscapes. Because pink noise resembles many sounds in everyday life, therapists often use pink noise as a tool to treat hearing disorders and tinnitus. Studies have also found that pink noise decreases the time it takes to fall asleep, enhances deep sleep, and increases sleep spindle density – short bursts of brain activity that help block out external stimuli while sleeping.
